COMMENTS: Ceremony for Webelos badges earned - Pinewood Derby theme
CubMaster- (Dusty): Hello sports fans. This is Dusty Graphite coming to you on K-U-B-S, Sports Radio 549. Just two days till RACE DAY and you can feel the excitement in the air. Let's go to ace reporter Woody Speedster. Woody...
Assistant CubMaster- (Woody): Well Dusty, word on the street is that the race isn't the only reason for all the excitement.
CubMaster: It isn't?
Assistant Cub Master: Nope. There are Den Leaders here that tell me they have boys that have earned their Webelos badges.
CubMaster: What!? They achieved that rank along with working so hard on these great race cars? We have some talented boys and focused leaders here!
Assistant CubMaster: We sure do! Their Den Leaders are here tell us all about it. Den Leaders, what kinds of things did these scouts have to do to earn these badges?
Den Leader: {take turns listing activities}
CubMasters: Leaders, would you call your boys up here to receive their badges.
Assistant CubMaster: Well that is all the awards. Congratulations boys! This is Woody Speedster signing off.
CubMaster: Thank you Woody. I can see why the excitement is so high. Congratulations Webelos! Now that the ceremony is over I can see that the Derby weigh-in is about to begin. For K-U-B-S Sports Radio 549, this has been Dusty Graphite. Good luck racers and have a great race day.

Hello Bill, I happened across your website on Projects, and I saw where you recommend taking magnets from discarded microwave ovens to magnetize a bent wire for a penny compass. For safety, you state to cut the powercord before opening the microwave to remove the magnets. Based on my experience in designing appliances for a major US appliance company, you are recommending a very dangerous act to untrained individuals. There is an electrical storage capacitor in a microwave oven that is extremely powerful and dangerous. These capacitors can store up to 2,500 volts and enough charge to cause severe electrical shock, and can cause death if discharged by touching its terminal(s) when well-grounded. Please remove this from your website as soon as possible.
If you must provide a source for magnets, a much safer source may be a loudspeaker woofer.
Best regards, Dan Renz
   Thanks, Dan
Back when I was doing this, the old ovens just had the magnetrons hooked across the high voltage transformers. There were no rectifiers or capacitors to worry about. Now I see that many ovens use voltage doublers that require a large capacitors that could possibly remain charged to a high voltage even when the oven has been turned off and unplugged.
Thanks again for the advice. The reference has been removed.
Bill

Wow wished I found this site 2 years ago when I became a leader. Our District is very slow to lead the way, yet our Director makes $200 K a year and hides, assistant make 120K they are slow on the web use and training. I have looked to other districts for guidance, and ideas. I think I have done well but your site will be passed on to the new leadership of our Pack. I have even resoted to asking for help from the local Boy Scout Trrop and gotten some great ideas and confirmed 100% of our 16 Webelos II want to continue to become sucessful Boy Scouts.
Going to look at your site much more just had to say Thank You.

COMMENTS: Bill, On a previous visit I thought I had seen an idea for a graduation ceremony in which the pack set up a faux campsite with fire and some large pots with dry ice to make it look like they were steaming. Then scouts would pull their neckerchiefs from the steaming pots. I can no longer find this and wondered if you can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a ceremony idea that is more fun than serious and the one I mentioned seemed to match.
Thank you so much for your website, you really have a lot of great ideas.
Gunnar Hood, Edmond, OK gunnarhood@cox.net
Gunner, I finally tracked it down to Marty's posting in Cub-Scout-Talk back in Oct. 29, 1999.

I brought in 6-8 small logs, stacked them with two alternating, pointing each way and put an orange shaded trouble light in the middle to give a fire glow. I then put a large pot (filled with dry ice) on top. In my case I had another pan in the center with neckerchiefs to give to new Cubs. I made a ceremony of adding blue and yellow colored water and got the expected steam effect coming from the pot. You could just add a little water to the dry ice now and then to keep it cooking.

I am stumped on. 13 = A.F. Is that the whole phrase? There are no letters missing? I am not looking for the answer, I want to figure it on my own. I am actually going to use it at RT.
Thanks again YIS Jim Goda
   It should have read: 8. 13 S. of the A. F.
Thank you for catching the error. I'm not sure how long it's been wrong up there. Probably years.
Have fun at your Roundtable!
