When I seen the first few lines about being a den leader, I was captivated, I had to keep readng. I began as a Tiger Leader in August 2006, I thought I had all the websites read that had anything to do with Cub Scouts. Had I found yours first, I wouldnt of needed to go on. Yours is by far, the best, most informative Cub Scout I have seen. I promise Ill be back for more!!

COMMENTS: I am so pleased to find your website and the uplifitng ideas and information. Our pack is going through some turmoil because of differences of opionins as to how to handle some problems dealing with peanut allergies. If you have had any experience with such, I would be interested to know about it. My sadness is magnified in realizing that some of our leaders find the inconvenience more important than the safety of the children with the allergies. I pray all involved can look at this as a way to pioneer a new standard for dealing with a severe life threatening allergy that is becoming more prominent, and incorporate the core values of scouting in dealing with it! Any help or guidance you can give will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

COMMENTS: Re- Your article about pure fun in Cubs & Bugs Baloo
Just wanted to share this story. I'm LDS, so Scouting positions are callings, not just jobs. Recently, a man was called to be CM over a joint pack (made up of two wards or congregations, each with a small number of boys). He shared with us that he had no previous scouting experience, didn't even really encourage his sons to go, thought they were crazy to call him as Cubmaster. But he came to a training we did, read what he could find, came to Roundtable, and gradually understood that his must important job was to make the monthly Pack Meeting interesting and fun for everyone - and of course, to have lots of ceremony! After several months, he has come to LOVE it - and does a wonderful job! He made pvc dog sleds, which even the fathers wanted to try, set up a TV "studio" for our Baloo Skies Pack Mtg, including a weatherman, Comedy Central (jokes told by sets of boys), and a Roving Reporter, who interviewed boys about their activities and two boys who were crossing over to Boy Scouts about their experiences - and every Pack Meeting is now well attended, even by parents! But what he told us is that he Loves the job - he is learning to look at things as a 9 yr old, with a whole new perspective, interest and awe in what's around him. He would agree wholeheartedly with your article. So do I - even though I'm 64, being a Scouter keeps me looking at the world as a place for "pretend", fun and wonder.

COMMENTS: We are trying to make the bird calls shown here on your site (and in the Bear handbook), but are not finding one of the key ingredients - the resin powder. Could you give us a lead as to exactly what it is we are looking for and where one might find it. Also, we are planning to make 1,000 of these for a community event/our Expo and would appreciate any kind of estimate of how much we would need to get to make 1,000 bird calls.
Also, is the eye screw size important? I would think so - do you know what size you should use? Maybe a 10 or 12? THANKS!!!!
Resin powder is used in baseball and boxing and is usually available in sports stores that cater to those activities. There seems to be some variability in quality but I think any would work for the bird call. I have heard reports that mucicians' resin for violin bows is better but the cost is much higher.
I have only made a few of these gadgets so I can only guess at how much you might need for a thousand - maybe a pound or two(?)
Larger screws work better. I don't recall what size I used. Sounds like fun (or many angry birds)

COMMENTS: BIRD CALL About 80% down the "Projects" page is: "BIRD CALL
MATERIALS; 2" hardwood, eye screw, resin powder
Take a close grained hardwood such a rock maple or mountain ash, about 2" long. Drill a hole in one end, slightly smaller than the screw threads of your eye screw. Turn the eye screw into it. Unscrew the eye, put a little resin powder in the hole. As you twist the screw back and forth in the hole, very slowly, you can make a chirp chirp or trill in loud, clear notes. With practice, this device will produce an astounding variety of bird noises. Paint or decorate if desired. "
It speaks as if resin powder is some common household item. What in the world is resin powder and where does one find it? A Google search turns up nothing useful. It appears this idea was submitted by the Grand Canyon Council, but the link to them doesn't work, so I'm hoping you can answer my question. This sounds like a great project. Roy
Two messages about Bird Calls in a week! Caused me to check out what is going on.
Turns out (according to Wikopedia) that resin is the liquid from evergreen trees that is used to make schellac and varnishes while rosin is the solid form when the volatile liquids are removed. Rosin powder is probably what should be in both my Project write up and in the Bear Book. Ask for rosin bags at your local sports store.

COMMENTS: I am new, outside from being in Scouting years ago, to the whole Pack situation. When I was in scouting there were 8 boys who stayed together all the through scouts into my Boy Scout days. Our troop fell apart because our Scout Master was tired of doing it.
Now after myself my son has joined Tiger Cubs and I am a den leader. However, the pack is in chaos, there sill be a change in leadership next year if anyone steps up and so far I am gearing up to lead our pack for the next few years. I have stumbld onto your website and let me tell you...heaven sent! I do not know who you are but would like to get to know you more as I will be visiting your site as much as possible over the course of the next year. You are probably very well known, maybe an icon in Scouting, and so I am a bit shameful for saying what I just said and a bit embarassed.
As I and another Tiger Den leader (my soon to be Assistant) hash over where to even begin in revamping our program, we noticed that we need a code of conduct, a standard, for the boys to adhere to. I have found your site to be most helpful in this area. What we found most appealing is your parent / leader handbook. Oh my gosh! Can we use most of it for our own pack? We have been working hard to put ideas together on a handbook and the one you have as taken out all of the guess work and intense leg work. I do not want to plagerize the handbook and so out of respect I wanted to touch base.
I look forward to hearing from you and can not wait to dive into your site further. Sincerely, Jeff Rooze
You are welcome to use anything here for Cub Scouting. That's what it's for. Copy it, adapt it so it fits your program and your boys.
The best advice I can give any new leader is to have fun. I would guess that you have fond memories of Scouting adventure and comradeship. Build on those.
Meet and talk with other leaders at local training and Roundtables. The best ideas come from active pack and den leaders.
Bill

Thanks for all the messages, especially the suggestions and encouragements.
