Rhonda 05/02/07
Cub RT Commissioner, Asst. Bear Den Leader,
COMMENTS: Is it appropriate to divide boys into Patrols for cub scout camping activities? Our Cubmaster who has just completed the practical course of Wood Badge is doing this to our Graduation Family Campout. As a Woodbager, I believe this to be the wrong approach for Cub Scouts. They are not ready for this structure and it is only for the campout. It is my oppinion that this plan is a mistake. Would you please comment?
You are correct in thinking that it is wrong to organize Cub Scouts into patrols rather than dens. It just doesn't work, even for Webelos. The difficulty is that spending time in a vain attempt to introduce the patrol method to boys too young to handle it will prevent giving them the Cub Scout and Webelos as written. There is a real danger that parent participation and guidance may be reduced.
I'm afraid that Wood Badge training may confuse Cub Scout leaders by presenting the patrol organization as the only model for Scouting.

COMMENTS: I found your site while searching for a new scout troop for my son. The leader at his former one was terrible. Many mistakes were made and the guy just didn't seem to care. I got mad and pulled my son. You seem like a person who cares and expects people to do their best like I do. Thank you.

COMMENTS: My group just earned the "Leave No Trace" temporary patch. It is supposed to hang from the right pocket button, but the Tiger Cub Emblem is on there. Do they wear both or take off the Tiger Cub Emblem? If they have to take it off is there an alternate place they could wear it until they complete thier Tiger Cub year?
Thank You
It will look a bit messy but the boys can wear both the Tiger Emblem with the strings and beads as well as one temporary patch such as the Leave No Trace patch. A similar rule will apply next year when they may wear the Progress in Ranks badge for Wolf and Bear.
An alternative that many packs and dens use is for boys to wear a red patch vests, or camp blankets for all their temporary patches and out of date stuff.

COMMENTS: Bill,
My dad was an awesome District Commissioner, and your site is exactly what he would have provided if he were interested in being on the web. I saw Scouting as a boy receiving the program and as a son watching his Dad implement it, from '70 - '95, and now I am SO frustrated that our District (Not my Dad's, his was in Ohio) is totally incompetent and refusing to follow program but go it on their own.
I'd love your advice (Thankfully my Dad and my favorite DE from those days have offered to help from a distance) on so many things, because my boys deserve a program the way it is meant to be.
Thanks for your site, and if I can ask you questions via email, please let me know. Thank you for your service! Kristofer Cowles

COMMENTS: Dear Bill Smith, i have noticed that in lagos it is not easy to get your troop together why is this so. i shall like a comment from you based on your observation about our activities in lagos nigeria. thank you till i hear from you i am your brother in scouting. regards richmond olusegun carew.
Unfortunately I know so little about Scouting and youth activities in Nigeria that any advice I might offer would probably be of no practical use. There are, I understand, some American Scouts in Lagos who you might contact. As Scouts, I would expect them to be helpful.
I do know, however that Scouting is and will continue to be important in developing leaders for Lagos and Nigeria. Your work in Scouting is valuable and we all commend you and thank you for all you do.

COMMENTS: I put your site in my favorites so I can come back here for a little ( a lot!!!) of help once in awhile, I hope you don't mind. I have found your site, and a couple of others, have been very helpful. My lady and I are hoping to plan a good year for our Wolf's (Wolves???), but both of us being new to the leadership we are feeling a little stressed already. We both helped with the Tiger den last year and will be with the same boys, two of them ours, so we are at least familiar with the core of our group, but both of us feel just a little bit intimidated from the expectations... I hope we do well. If you have any specific advice don't be afraid to e-mail me... please!!! Thanks again! Jhonny

Chartered Organiztion Rep, Pack, Troop, Crew, Hamilton, NJ
COMMENTS: Bill: LOVE YOUR SITE! I just found it by googling "Cub Scout Pack 28, Jackson, NJ". You see, in the early 60's that is where I got my start in scouting. After earning the arrow of light in Pack 28, I moved on to Troop 300 out of St Veronica's Church, where we were parishoners - that was about 1967 or so. In 1968 we moved to Northern NJ, where I joined Troop 13 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Orange, which was in the old Orange Mountain Council. In 1972, I earned my Eagle from that troop. Since about 1990 I have been active at my current parish, Our Lady of Sorrows in Hamilton, NJ, first as a parent, they quickly as a Pack Committee Chair, and since about 1991 as Chartered Org Rep. In the mid 90's we started a boy scout troop, 38, and my oldest son got his eagle from there 5 years ago. Last night, another of my sons got his eagle - from Venture Crew 500 of the Diocese of Trenton Catholic Committee on Scouting - although he did most of the work in our troop. My scoutmaster from Troop 13 was there to help with the ceremony, and he today wrote me to ask me for a scouting resume. Well, that got me to wondering if my old pack was still around, and if there were any chance of any records from the early days. Anyway, thought I would drop you a note. Do you have contact with any NJ locals from those days? Please email me. I am wondering if you were my first Cubmaster. Kevin OBoyle
